Service Effectiveness Test on Press operations utilizing Local 5G Access Network during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation (President: Fukuzo Inoue, hereinafter "NTT East "), with cooperation from press agencies, will conduct a service effectiveness test in press operation using local 5G Access Network* installed at the Olympic Stadium during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 (hereinafter "Tokyo 2020 Games").

  • *A 5th generation mobile communication system that business users can construct in their own buildings or premises according to their regional or individual needs.

1. Background

The expectation on the speed for distributing visual contents in the current media is increasing, and transferring photo data reliably and quickly are become significant for the events that draw large attentions such as global sports events.

NTT East have decided to conduct a test with the aim of gaining knowledge of practical usage of the 5th generation mobile communication system* (hereinafter, "local 5G") as telecommunication service, in the field of press operations for large-scale events.

The participating press agencies will join the test to gain knowledge for future press operations, such as sending photographs immediately and stably under dedicated local 5G (licensed radio frequency) without interference from other wireless communications used by spectators, etc.

Through these activities, NTT East will contribute in realizing co-creation of new use cases in press operations.

2. Outline

NTT East will install local 5G at the Olympic Stadium, and photographers from the press agencies can immediately upload photo data taken in the field of play during the competition as well as opening and closing ceremonies of Tokyo 2020 Gaes.We will test its practicality of local 5G in press operation which the speed of information is essential.

3. Implementing period

From July 23 (Fri) to August 8 (Sun), 2021 (During the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020)

From August 24th (Tuesday) to September 5th (Sunday), 2021 (During the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games)

4. Location

Olympic Stadium (10-1, Kasumigaokamachi, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)

5. Press agencies participating in the test

Five International Olympic Committee (IOC) official international press agencies and one Tokyo 2020 Games official domestic press agency will participate to the test:

  • L'Agence France-Presse(AFP)
  • Reuters
  • Xinhua News Agency
  • Kyodo News

6. Role

NTT East
Install and operate local 5G as telecommunication service at the Olympic Stadium
Press agencies participating in the test
Transfer the photo data taken in the venue to the Main Press Centre using local 5G as telecommunication service

7. The plan for next actions

Through the knowledge gained from this test, NTT East will promote the introduction of local 5G to venues which can hold large-scale events and to sports-related facilities, as well as take actions to create further innovation in utilizing local 5G with partners from media and in the field of sports,
