Telephones that can be used

The telephones that can be used for Disaster Emergency Message Dial are fixed telephones, INS-Net*,public telephones, optical fiber telephones*, and special public telephones that are provided at evacuation centers by NTT during a disaster. The service can also be used from mobile phones and PHSs, but please check the details with the provider of your communication device.

  • *The service can not be used from rotary phone.

Service start

The service is provided quickly when a disaster such as an earthquake occurs that increases the communication traffic to the disaster-stricken area due to people trying to check the safety of people they know, making it difficult to get through (lines are busy).

  • *Start of service, operation methods such as the telephone numbers that can be registered and other conditions regarding the provision of the service will be decided by NTT and announced to the public over television, radio and the NTT East Website.

Telephone numbers that can be registered (disaster-stricken area telephone numbers)

Messages can be recorded only for fixed telephone, mobile phone, PHS, and IP telephone numbers in a disaster-stricken area (generally designated by prefecture). When entering a fixed telephone number, the area code must be included.

Message recording time, message storage period, number of storable messages

Message recording time Up to 30 seconds maximum per message
Message storage period Until the end of the Disaster Emergency Message Dial (171) service period (until the end of the practice period in the case of practice use)
Number of storable messages From 1 to 20 messages per telephone number (The number will be notified at the time of service provision.)
  • *Start of service, operation methods such as the telephone numbers that can be registered and other conditions regarding the provision of the service will be decided by NTT and announced to the public over television, radio and the NTT East Website.

Message deletion

Messages will be deleted when the Disaster Emergency Message Dial (171) service period ends (or at the end of the practice period in the case of practice use).

Charges

There are no charges for calls made through the NTT East/NTT West telephone service to record and play back messages. Please inquire with the respective telecommunications carrier regarding charges for calls placed from fixed, mobile or PHS phones of other telecommunications carriers. There is no charge for using the center for operations such as message recording.

  • *The service is free to use from the special public telephones that are provided at evacuation centers.
  • Note:A PIN number can be used to ensure that messages are only recorded and played back between the intended people and cannot be accessed by others.
